BACKGROUND:
Trainer+ is a fitness training and management technology designed for fitness centers and personal trainers. The technology allows fitness professionals to support their clients in person and online by using Trainer+ website and mobile apps to create and prescribe workout programs, have clients track them and provide feedback, then update the program from the results. The platforms facilitate a multidimensional approach to fitness training which consists of assessment, oversight, accountability, ongoing program updates and feedback.
On a higher level, the company strives to bridge the existing gap between healthcare and fitness as the number one preventative care by enabling individuals to have a personal electronic fitness record just as they have a medical record. The vision of this technology is to create a world in which everyone has access to an effective and affordable preventative health plan advised by a qualified fitness professional.
GOAL
As the first UX Designer joining the team, I had to figure everything out on my own and structure my contribution efficiently. In order to this, I had to get as much information about the product as I possibly could to plan my approach and set goals. I started by booking time with each team member to get to know them and learn about any research that had been done, user types and needs, business goals, competitors and technical limitations. From the data collected from our conversations, I set the following high-level UX Design goals for Trainer+ website and two mobile applications:
-
Make the overall design consistent with the new trends in visual and interaction design so it’s simple and easy to use for fitness professionals and their clients
-
Enhance the overall experience for longer user engagement so more signups turn into paying clients
-
Give users more control and flexibility over the areas of fitness content creation, trainers’ oversight, and clients’ workout tracking
TRAINER+ APP
Trainer+ strives to shift the focus of personal training from sell to support by automating client management and oversight. Together with business and product development team, we reshaped the user experience of the Client List on Trainer+ mobile app. We redesigned the screen based on the new trends and best practices in visual and interaction design. We also implemented a new notification system to make client support and oversight more efficient.

TRAINER+ WEB
We enhanced the digital experience of Trainer+ website by performing a major UX and interaction design overhaul to ensure overall consistency and compatibility with new design trends and best practices. We specifically looked at three main areas of interactions for personal trainers throughout the website including the Client Card, the Exercise Library and the Workout Library. In order to increase the scalability, accessibility, and flexibility of the platform, we added a new shared library feature where trainers can be members of multiple exercise libraries in addition to the content they create on their own. These libraries contain templates of programs or workouts that the trainer can access, customize and then assign to clients. Some trainers will be members of multiple shared libraries, and some libraries may have a lot of program or workout templates. With the new Exercise and Workout Library design, we made sure this experience is simple and more intuitive to navigate for our users by improving the filtering system.
